Southern Company said Friday that its Southern Power subsidiary has signed a memorandum of understanding with Wartsila to develop two flexible gas power plant projects, as large as 450 megawatts each. Southern Power will lead the project.
Headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, Wartsila manufactures and services power sources and other equipment in the marine and energy markets. In related news, Southern Company is suspending start-up and operations activities at the coal gasification unit at its Mississippi plant. Years behind schedule and $7.5 billion over budget, the plant, which was developed to burn cheap lignite coal more cleanly than conventional plants, is still not running properly. The gas-fired plant will continue to operate as intended.
